God Girl was a revelation. I was having a tough night and feeling pretty selfish, so I prayed. That prayer started out "Girl -". I'd thought of my higher power as a woman theoretically for years, but that was the first time it'd just rolled off my tongue. When it came time to record, we added a chorus of four non-male-identifying singers doing some wild harmonies and percussive breathing, and a musical saw to evoke the isolation and doubt that I was feeling.
