about

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

Life is complicated; life is simple. Sometimes we cause harm, even when we don't mean to. The latter half of this song was written as a plaintive mantra that I needed. And as we performed it across the Midwest in 2019, it was clear that so many others needed it too.

I hope dearly that anyone who listens to this song can feel where they carry wells of shame and resentment, and start to integrate with those pasts rather than regret them. Life just keeps happening, until it doesn't. Ideally, we would live life without hurting anyone or anything. But life is complicated, and we will cause harm. And life is simple, because it keeps going despite hurt, and we can keep trying to do better.

lyrics

My shoulders wanted his fingers
Soon as my ear had the pleasure of his voice
He showed me photos of his daughter
And his songs were unhappy but he never said divorce

I drove home my night was long
I fell asleep and I woke up alone
We all know a girl can dream but
She wakes up with a woman's needs

My fingers fumbled with the action
Of his busted old guitar
But his eyes were shining as they took me in
So I stayed and I played for him in the parking lot

I drove home my night was cold
I fell asleep and I woke up alone
We all know a girl has needs but
She wakes up with a woman's dreams

Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
Peace to everything that I have hurt and that has hurt me
